Research Associate

Dairy cheese is unsustainable and plant-based cheeses don’t work. At New Culture, we are making cow cheese without the cow. We are making cheese that is sustainable, healthy, ethical and indistinguishable from current dairy cheese in taste, texture and function. Using fermentation to produce dairy proteins, food science to combine those proteins with plant-based fats and sugars and traditional cheesemaking methods to make any cheese of choice, we are bringing about a new culture for the cheese industry.

We are a San Francisco based, IndieBio startup that has recently completed our seed fundraising. We are now looking for an experienced and motivated Research Associate to join us in our mission of producing animal-free dairy cheese. You will play a key role in designing/executing experiments related to the construction and optimization of microbial strains for the production of our proteins.

What will you be doing:

  • Help design, execute and troubleshoot experiments focused on molecular biology (cloning, DNA analysis, microbial handing) and strain engineering (genome editing) for recombinant protein production

  • Prepare and autoclave media, plates, stock solutions and buffers

  • Participate in purchasing and lab restocking for consumables and maintenance of instruments

  • Provide support to other scientists on the team when and where needed

  • Document experimental procedures and protocols timely and accurately

  • Collect and analyze the data with high rigour and present at company meetings

What we expect from you:

  • BSc in Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or another relevant life science discipline, and 2+ years of industry or academic lab experience

  • Hands-on experience with media and culturing optimization, molecular biology techniques (PCR, Gibson assembly and alike, traditional cloning, sequencing etc), genome editing techniques (homologous recombination, CRISPR etc), strain screening and selection methods

  • Ability to design, perform and troubleshoot experiments with minimal guidance

  • Ability to deliver high-quality work under constraints of time and budget

  • Ability to work closely in a team of interdisciplinary and intercultural individuals

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Authorization to work in the US

Even better if you had:

  • Prior start-up experience

  • Experience with protein biochemistry methods (quantification assays, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, ELISA)

How to know you are a great fit:

  • You’re an avid learner, maker, doer

  • You’re a team player

  • You’re creative and resourceful

  • You’re kind, honest and empathetic

  • You work hard

  • You’re driven by company’s mission and hungry to make a difference

Position is a temp-to-hire after a 2 month evaluation period.
