Lab Technician


Dairy cheese is unsustainable and plant-based cheeses don’t work. At New Culture, we are making cow cheese without the cow. We are making cheese that is sustainable, healthy, ethical and indistinguishable from current dairy cheese in taste, texture and function. Using fermentation to produce dairy proteins, food science to combine those proteins with plant-based fats and sugars and traditional cheesemaking methods to make any cheese of choice, we are bringing about a new culture for the cheese industry.

We are a San Francisco based, IndieBio startup that has recently completed our seed fundraising. We are now looking for an experienced and motivated Lab Technician to join us in our mission of producing animal-free dairy cheese. You will play a key role in bringing about successful and on-track experiments through media preparation, sterilisation and lab stocking.


What will you be doing:

  • Prepare and autoclave media, plates, stock solutions, buffers and glassware. 

  • Wash more sensitive glassware by hand

  • Assemble and disassemble fermentation equipment for autoclave sterilization 

  • Keep accurate batch records of media preparation and other important experimental prep 

  • Maintain a regular and tracked inventory of chemicals, consumables and maintenance of instruments 

  • Maintain lab with general cleaning and organisation of stocked consumables and chemicals

  • Dispose of laboratory and biohazard waste

  • Provide support to other scientists on the team when and where needed


What we expect from you:

  • 2-5 years of experience as a lab assistant

  • Experience making solutions, making media and plates, cleaning labware, operating autoclaves and placing orders on laboratory supply websites

  • Experience in handling and disposing of hazardous waste

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Online lab notebooks and other basic computer skills

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and routinely carry large items (up to 50lbs)

  • Ability to deliver high-quality work under constraints of time and budget

  • Ability to work closely in a team of interdisciplinary and intercultural individuals

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Authorization to work in the US


Even better if you had:

  • Prior start-up experience

  • Experience with protein biochemistry methods (quantification assays, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, ELISA)
